Firstly, their new series, "Rome," is very well done, and secondly, "Real Time" with Bill Maher is spot on!
I watched it last night, and was whooping and hollering at the television. Here are a few quotes that are in line with what I've been thinking and saying the past several weeks...
"We're still grappling with these issues ourselves. 30% - 40% of the United States that is deeply religious and has a, shall we say, sometimes troubled relationship with modernity and American Democracy as a result of it." -- Fareed Zakaria, Editor "Newsweek International" on HBO's "Real Time" with Bill Maher
"I'm a Jesus Freak. I'm an ordained Baptist minister. I'm tired of all of the publicity going toward right-wing evangelicals who have a denuciatory politics that disses everybody God was concerned about. If Jesus came here as the son of a teen mother, wasn't married to her husband, lived in poverty, went over to Egypt looking for a way out, and that means that he got stuck there because he looked like the people who're there are people of color, and grew up to die from capital punishment hangin' out with his peeps. I'm telling you that the kind of God that I'm talking about, and that's the kind of God who identifies with everybody." -- Michael Eric Dyson, Author of "Bill Cosby is Right?" on HBO's "Real Time" with Bill Maher
"Our [constitutional] framers were a homogenous group comprised of only white, land-owning males. Today, we would hardly call that a constitutional convention. We'd call that a Republican convention." -- Bill Maher, HBO's "Real Time" with Bill Maher
"That's all [Republicans] know how to do is public relations. I'm sure Bush is sitting around today going, 'I was hugging negroes all day long. What do you want from me?!?'" -- Bill Maher, HBO's "Real Time" with Bill Maher
"I'm going to read you quote from the head of Homeland Security... 'The critical thing was to get people out of there before this disaster. Some people chose not to obey that order, and that was a mistake on their part.' And this is what I call, unintentional racism. That's the whole thing with the Bush people. They just can't imagine... 'Why don't you pack up your Range Rover, grab a case of Poland Spring water out of the garage, and go to your summer home? What is the problem???' They just don't get it!" -- Bill Maher, HBO's "Real Time" with Bill Maher
"This is the game of politics, and I'll give the Republicans this. They understand like a boxer, 'I'm sorry that you have that gash over your eye, but I'm going to try to wear that gash out because I'm trying to win this war.' The Democrats don't understand that in the game of politics, if you see the opportunity to usefully exploit for the benefit of the masses of people who voted for you to do something, you have an obligation morally to do so. The Democrats have not found a voice or a spine." -- Michael Eric Dyson, Author of "Bill Cosby is Right?" on HBO's "Real Time" with Bill Maher
"You referred to us as three liberals. Geezus, what am I talking about that isn't conservative? We have a president who makes his dad look like Abby Hoffman for God's sake. I mean there is nothing conservative about a war of choice, badly planned, based on false intelligence -- or bleeding the treasury." -- Bradley Whitford, from NBC's "The West Wing" on HBO's "Real Time" with Bill Maher
"The Democrats think that if they stay in the middle of the road and stay quiet and wait for the poll numbers to keep dropping, then they will reap the benefit without taking any risks." -- Mary Frances Berry, Author of "My Face Is Black Is True" on HBO's "Real Time" with Bill Maher
"And that's how they've lost the last couple of elections." -- Bill Maher, HBO's "Real Time" with Bill Maher
"Let's transform the situation given what we have. And I'm telling you wimpy, whiny, spineless, feckless, and just inappropriate Democrats have not stepped up to the plate to represent us. I'm tired of defending them! Get on your job!" -- Michael Eric Dyson, Author of "Bill Cosby is Right?" on HBO's "Real Time" with Bill Maher
Amen brothers and sisters!
